Eye of Horus

 161

The Eye of Horus was a symbol used by the ancient egyptians. Horus was the son of Isis, and was conceived after the Goddess Isis' husband Osiris was killed by Set, Isis' brother. Isis fled with Horus and later Horus fought with Set to determine the fate of Egypt. In one of these battles, Horus lost his eye. When he recovered it, he offered it to Osiris in exchange for his life.

The Eye of Horus symbolises healing, sacrifice, restoration and protection.. Amulets for funerals were made in the shape of the Eye of Horus to protect the dead in the afterlife. Sailors often painted the Eye of Horus on boats to receive protection during crossings and to make safe voyages.

This all-seeing eye is today a powerful protective symbol.
